Who saw the wolf?
By 2023, more than 50 wolves have been identified in the Valais, particularly in the Val d'Anniviers region. A godsend for some, a bone of contention for others... Living, or staying, in the Valais Alps means cohabiting with thousands of species that make this ecosystem possible, sometimes at a price. Rest assured, the wolves' appetite is mainly limited to a few small wild mammals! The Musée de la Faune in Chandolin has set itself the task of giving you an insight into the region's mammals and birds through an educational exhibition.
Take a diversion there before setting off on your hike, and you'll be able to spot and name certain species likely to cross your path (as far as wolves are concerned, the chances are very slim!). On the other hand, on the mountain paths, you might have a nice encounter with a Yellow-billed Chochard (often called a Jackdaw), that typical little black bird that lives up to 4,000 metres above sea level, a Spotted Woodpecker (lively and determined, it digs round holes in tree trunks with its sharp beak), or a Bearded Vulture, that impressive vulture that, in Switzerland, lives only in the Alps.
Finally, there are also bears in the region! :)
